Leading International Arbitrator Joins Krogerus

Krogerus is pleased to announce that Supreme Court Justice Mr Gustaf Möller, one of Northern Europe’s leading international arbitrators, has joined the firm as Of Counsel effective as of 1 December 2009.

Justice Möller joins the firm’s Dispute Resolution practice group and will primarily focus on international arbitration in addition to which he will also advise on other complex dispute resolution matters.

Justice Möller has a long and distinguished career having spent some 45 years in public service, mainly in the judiciary. He joins Krogerus from the Supreme Court of Finland, where he served for over 17 years as Justice. Justice Möller is a member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and on the panel of arbitrators at the London Court of International Arbitration, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (established under the Washington ICSID Convention), the Permanent Court of Arbitration (established at The Hague) and various other leading international arbitration institutions.

Justice Möller is the leading authority on international arbitration in Finland having authored most of the important legal writings in the field and he currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of both the Arbitration Institute of the Central Chamber of Commerce of Finland and the Finnish Arbitration Association. Justice Möller also serves as the Chairman of the Board of the Finnish Branch of the International Law Association and as a member of the Executive Council of the International Law Association.

Justice Möller has represented Finland in various international projects relating to the fields of private international law and arbitration. Notably, he chaired the joint EU-EFTA working group for the revision of the Brussels and Lugano judgment conventions which eventually resulted in the issuance of the Council Regulation (EC) No 44/2001 on jurisdiction and the recognition and enforcement of judgments in civil and commercial matters. Justice Möller also represented Finland in the working group preparing the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration and in other UNCITRAL projects relating to arbitration including the amendments of the UNCITRAL Model Law. He currently represents Finland in the pending revision of the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules.

“It is a privilege and great pleasure to join one of Finland’s leading law firms. This will further enhance my ability to act as an international arbitrator and also enable me to be involved in advising the firm’s clients on other challenging matters. Transitioning into private practice is a very exciting opportunity for me and I look forward to working with my new colleagues at Krogerus”, says Justice Möller.

“We are very excited that Justice Möller is joining Krogerus. Given his extraordinary recognition in the international arbitration community and generally in Northern Europe’s legal community, he is a very significant addition to our practice and an inspiring role model for all our lawyers. The arrival of Justice Möller is further testament to our success in establishing ourselves as one of the top dispute resolution practices in Finland. We look forward to working with him to provide the highest quality of legal services to our clients”, says Mr Jari-Pekka Alho, Head of Dispute Resolution at Krogerus.

“It is with great pleasure that we welcome Justice Möller to our firm. Such an outstanding and accomplished lawyer would certainly have been a great recruitment for any firm. From a broader perspective, the unprecedented move of a Supreme Court Justice to a leading law firm marks an extraordinary moment in the development of the Finnish legal market. On firm level, this is yet another extraordinary recruitment over the past 18 months during which we have seen a team of seven accomplished lawyers join us from another leading firm in the first major lateral move on the Finnish market as well as the recruitment of the general counsel of a large publicly traded company”, says Mr Juha Pekka Katainen, Managing Partner at Krogerus.

“Although the past 10 years have been a period of uniquely strong growth for the vast majority of firms on the Finnish legal market, Krogerus is among the very few leading firms that have been able to boast steady growth also during 2008 and 2009. Taking into account the extraordinary developments at our firm during this period, we are perfectly positioned for strong growth also over the years to come”, continues Mr Katainen.
